Long Claude conversations are valuable because they preserve the work trail. They are also fragile because the trail can become hard to navigate.
A good long-conversation workflow has three habits: watch the size, mark the important moments and split the chat when the goal changes.
Watch the size
Conversation metrics help you understand how large the chat is becoming. ClaudePack shows input tokens, output tokens, estimated context and message count.
Those values are not presented as exact Anthropic tokenizer output unless exact data is available. Estimates are still useful for noticing growth and making organization decisions.
Mark the important moments
Bookmark important messages as soon as you recognize them. Do not wait until the conversation is already huge.
Useful bookmarks include accepted plans, final answers, strong explanations, working snippets, requirements and decisions. Bookmarks turn a long scroll into a set of landmarks.
Fork when the goal changes
If the conversation shifts into a different direction, fork. A fork creates a new conversation from a selected point using relevant visible context up to that point. The original chat stays unchanged.
This is especially useful for development work, writing alternatives and research branches.
Export when the chat becomes a record
Some conversations become artifacts. Export them. Markdown is good for notes and repositories. Word-compatible export is useful for document review. JSON is useful when you want structured data.
Exports are most useful when paired with bookmarks. Bookmark first so you know what mattered, then export when the whole conversation becomes worth saving.
Use templates to reduce repeated setup
